Chris Whittam photographed Decathlon UK’s Big Paddle Cleanup, the campaign Decathlon runs with Paddle UK to pull litter out of the nation’s waterways, capturing authentic, real-people brand imagery for a national sustainability campaign.

Decathlon UK Big Paddle Cleanup volunteers on the water, CSR event photography by Chris Whittam

The brief

Spend the morning on the water with 25 volunteers and tell the story of the day, from the team ready and raring to go at the start, to the graft on the water and the bags filling up as they went. Over twenty bags of litter were pulled out, and one stretch of river was left noticeably cleaner than they found it.

Why it mattered

This is the photography that matters most: real people, real impact, the sort of thing a brand cannot fake and a stock library cannot sell. For a CSR and community campaign, authenticity is everything, the imagery has to feel as genuine as the cause.

The result

A set of honest, energetic images that told the story of the day and gave Decathlon UK ready-to-use content for the campaign. In the client’s words: “Great to work with Chris, who is as passionate as he is skilled. Great communication throughout and a great range of photos delivered against the brief.”
